Mental Health Coaching

In the my book, Healing From Depression: 12 Steps to a Better Mood, I state that an essential tool in recovering from depression is having a “recovery partner” or “recovery coach.” This is someone who can be your guide and can help you to complete the better mood recovery program. Each week you would check in with this individual, share your vision statement, and work on your goal of the week.

Ideally, your recovery coach will be someone who lives close to you. If you are not able to locate such a person in your area, I am willing to serve as your mental health coach. We would communicate weekly by phone and by email as you participate in the 12 week program that is outlined in the book.

    Hello Douglas,
    I’ve truly enjoyed perusing your website and would like to ask you a few questions about your Recovery Coaching business. I am 49, have a Masters degree in Counseling and have been in Recovery from Depression and ADHD for many years now.
    I have worked in the field as a peer counselor, a consumer advocate and also as a WRAP teacher. Because of the inconsistent nature of this illness however, I have been unable to sustain a full time job in many years. This winter marks the 6th year I have sat at home, unable to find work and wishing I had the entrepreneurial saavy to start my own business.
    It occurred to me not long ago that Recovery Coaching might be a good option for me. I live in Nashville, TN and the Certified Peer Specialist Movement has grown but I do not think there are many Recovery Coaches in this vicinity yet.
    Would you be so kind as to share with me how your business is going, the demand for it and if you offer a sliding scale fee for payment.
    I realize that in some small way, I may be seen as competition but I hope you will in some way consider me as a fellow consumer who simply needs a helping hand.
    By the way, if you ever need anyone to write about their TMS treatment regimen, I’m the one for you! Several months ago I had 35 treatments in the course of 5 weeks.
    I’d be glad to share my experience with you.

    I have suffered from a kind of low-grade depression all of my life. When I was younger I always felt hopeful that I would eventually overcome it, and find happiness in various pursuits. I never did. Now that I am 75, I just sort of gave up looking for anything anymore. I don’t feel bad, exactly, but watching the TV program “Hoarders”, I realize that I still have depression, and it is interfering in having even a satisfactory life. I guess I need to actually care about myself, my house, etc… before I can even want to work on the depression…if that makes sense. The only part of my life that works is the spiritual part, and it is what holds me together, and gives me hope—but not in this life. But, I am thinking that maybe God would want me to do better at this life first. Anyway it could help for me to talk with someone about all the things that are causing me problems now and keeping me from even wanting to get better. Various health problems are big things that help keep me from doing a lot of what I probably need to be doing to live a better life. I have no one to talk to about any of these things, and that is probably part of the depression. Having realized recently that I have been living with Aspergers, also makes me wonder if I even want to become more social, and less isolated. Anyway, that’s my story–or part of it.

      OMG! Marian, I was just reading your letter and saw myself in you. It has been years going through whatever this is called and I too am desiring to find happiness again. I will be 70 in June and still learning about what I am here to do. Daily I do affirmations to lift my spirit and just being in this now moment helps a great deal. Louise Hayes has been a great inspiration for me as well. If you need someone to talk to , I would be happy to share with you? I am needing help and support as well..Virginia
